SanDisk's new embedded SSDs for high-end tablets

SanDisk introduced a new line of embedded flash drives, the iNand Extreme. These new drives are designed to be used with high-end tablets and other mobile devices that require high performance drive for data-intensive applications. The new drive features up 80MB/sec of sequential read and up to 50MB/sec of sequential write speeds.

With all the multimedia files that tablet devices use there is a significant need for speed and responsivnes of the drives. Some devices feature HD recording capabilities which is a data-intensive process and a fast drive reduces the risk of frame-drops. This can also signifactly increase the data-rate of the video and in turn quality.

“The embedded application market is experiencing significant growth through the increasing popularity and variety of mobile computing platforms,” said Jeff Janukowicz, research manager, solid state storage technology, IDC. “Companies with broad embedded product lineups and value-added services have an increasing capability to meet the diverse needs within the mobile market.”

Doodling with the layout

I've decided to play around a bit with my blog layout, since weekends are not very interesting in news. No official news, press releases, nothing. So, I've changed the heading with a very simple logo and changed the description. I've also added a facebook activity box on the right column and on the bottom of the page I've added a "Our Favorite Diggs" module and Most Popular module. (all-time/this week).

UPDATE: Changed the default commenting system with DISQUS commenting system. I've also added a new widget on the right column displaying the categories for this blog.

Million Dollar Earth turns 24...days old! First copycat emerges

It took only 16 days for Jerry Li to create the first copycat of MillionDollarEarth.com, called FortuneEarth. A cheap ripoff of a clever and original idea by Ryan Hart and Scott Dahl. Visiting that site, you get introduced to ads and a not so elegant design.

Ryan Hart said in a blog post on MillionDollarEarth, "You may be thinking that my reactions was OH NO YOU DON’T! but rather it was THANK YOU. Copy-cats validate the feasibility of a venture. Imitators show you that you are on the right path. Everyone loves a good cover song."

The ripoff site appears to have sold 3 cities already for a total sum of $40.500 US. The original project (MDE) has sold 43 cities for $58.250 US, but you get to keep the city for yourself and can later resell for a better offer. Unlike FortuneEarth were you pay ridiculous amounts for exclusive ownership and without the ability of re-selling it for a better offer. Meanwhile MDE gives 10% of the proceeds to Charity:Water, a non-profit organization that brings clean water to millions in need.

There is also a contest to win a $1000 city on MillionDollarEarth. I've already signed my email and if I'm lucky to win, I'll resell and give the earnings to the same charity! Since I live near a spring of fresh water that is just a couple kilometers from my home, I'm in no need of fresh water unlike millions.

Android Smartphone are now outselling iOS smartphones in Japan

Samsung's smartphone, the Galaxy S, outsold iOS smartphones in Japan during Q1 2011. This places Samsung in the top 4 handset vendors of Japan.

Tom Kang, Director of the Handset Country Share Tracker service at Strategy Analytics, said, “The Japanese market had always been tough to crack for foreign vendors as all previous attempts had failed. With smartphones, things are changing rapidly. First, Apple shook up the market with the iPhone, and now, for the first time, Samsung, is shipping more handsets than most local vendors, such as NEC, Casio and Kyocera.”

Neil Mawston, Director, Strategy Analytics, added, “Strategy Analytics believes that the healthy demand for the Android-powered Galaxy S at NTT DoCoMo drove Samsung growth in Japan. Samsung is the main player behind surging Android smartphone sales, followed by Sharp. Japan had always had a unique competitive landscape, but is now looking more and more like any other advanced smartphone market in the world as Android has flown by iOS in just three quarters.”
“Japan was not the only market affected by changes in the handset vendor rankings,” said Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “In China, Huawei surpassed most foreign brands, such as LG and Motorola. Huawei even leaped ahead of local rivals like Lenovo and ZTE, entering the top-5 vendor list for the first time. The growth from smartphones and 3G devices is a serious disruptive force in Asia right now.”

Another big success for NVIDIA at Computex. The Tegra 2 mobile super chip has been award the Computex "Best Choise" award for Smart Handheld Devices Innovation from the Taipei Computer Association.

The competition was hard and the chip got picked from 400 other products, from every electronic product category. The Tegra chip was selected based on overall technical merit, innovation and marketability by a panel of government representatives, academia, research analysts, tech editors and other expers.

NVIDIA's award is the 3rd in a row of awards from Computex. NVIDIA won the same award last year for the GeForce GTX 480 GPU and the year before that, with the NVIDIA Ion GPU.

"The NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor is truly a super chip,” said the jury of the Best Choice Award. “It has ushered in a new wave of super phones and tablet devices with never-before-seen capabilities and experiences. We selected Tegra 2 from hundreds of entries because it’s an outstanding technological achievement that’s impacted the industry very positively."

"It’s an honor to receive this prestigious award from the Taipei Computer Association,” said Phil Carmack, Senior Vice President of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “This helps validate the very sizable investment we’ve placed in Tegra and demonstrates that the mobile market is significant for NVIDIA. But this is only the start. With Project Kal-El, our quad-core processor, we’re planning to take mobile computing to even higher levels."

With the Tegra 2 chip, we have seen simple handheld devices transfrom into real computers with enough processing power to challenge even console gaming platforms. Already a lot of devices in the market, feature this incredible processor and we will see even more in the coming future.

26 TeraBits per Second

Found an interesting article on BBC Science & Technology. They report that TeraBits per second speeds of data communication have been achieved in lab. Not just 1 Tbps, but 26 Tbps. You can read about it here.

What can you do with those speeds? What would you do if you had an internet connection with that kind of data rate? That's 2.95TBytes per second!

In one second you could transfer:
4427 Audio CDs (700mb)
659 Single Layer DVDs
362 Dual Layer DVDs
129 Single Layer BluRays
65 Dual Layer BlueRays
3 1TB Hard Disk Drives

Of course all the above figures are just comparisons to the data rates achieved in the lab. There is no computer that fast to transfer those kinds of data. A typical motherboard with a x16 PCI express slot can deliver up to 16GBytes per second. A DDR3 memory running @1333Mhz transfers data with a rate of 10.4GB/s.

So those kind of transfer speeds can be utilized only by large telecommunications companies, to deliver more data to their networks.

Micro-HDMI Cable for Tablets and Smartphones

These days a lot of portable devices, like tablets and smart phones, support playback of High Definition video. Most of the time this video is to large for the device's display (1080p). Standard HDMI cables are to bulky to be used with these devices. There are solutions to this problem and RedMere has the best solution to date. A ultra-thin and portable Micro-HDMI cable.

Cables powered by RedMere’s technology are only 25% of the size of a standard HDMI cable and because they are light and ultra-thin they are easier to bend, route and disguise in your home after plugging in and installing with your DVD, set-top box, or Blu-ray player.

AMD G-Series APUs

AMD introduced today two new Embedded G-Series APUs with an amazing TDP rating of 5.5 and 6.4 watts, up to 39 percent power saving compared to earlier designs. These new APU's support one or two low-power x86 "Bobcat" CPU cores with a discreet DirectX-11 capable GPU on a single die.

This ultra low APU can be used on systems with a fanless design like, mobile industrial devices, kiosks, digital signage and many other small form factor devices.

“We have seen many of our embedded customers deploy fanless systems even with our 15W TDP processors in the past. Today we take the ground-breaking AMD Fusion APU well below 7W TDP and shatter the accepted traditional threshold for across-the-board fanless enablement,” said Buddy Broeker, director, Embedded Solutions, AMD.

Systems based on the new low power AMD Embedded G-Series platform include an industrial mobile device from Amtek, a Pico-ITX single board computer from Axiomtek, a Qseven form factor computer-on-module from datakamp, and a fanless digital signage platform from iBASE. Additional customers are expected to bring new products to market in the coming quarters.

Xoom vs. Galaxy vs. iPad2

I've recently wrote a comparison article on the Motorola Xoom vs. the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I'm currently seeking to buy a tablet device and was aiming only at Android tablets. The conclusion on that article was, that both reviewed devices were almost identical, in terms of design, hardware/software and price tags. (Very uncompetitive in my opinion) So I'll do a follow up to that article , throwing Apple's iPad in the game. Let us see what conclusions we can draw up after that. I should also state at this point that I generally don't like Apple and their products due to bad personal experience. I'll try my best for a un-biased comparison/review.

Games for Cats!

Who said that tablets are only for humans? Friskies developed 3 games that are intended to be used by our feline friends.

All games are developed using HTML5 and CSS3, this way you can use a URL and an HTML5/CSS3 enabled browser to let your cats play the games. Of course you would want to open these up in your iPad or Android tablet and let your cats use the touchscreen rather than your mouse...or worse, your 27" inch IPS monitor that doesn't support touchscreen features. :p

The colors, movement, and game-play have been researched and tested for maximum feline fun. See the Games for Cats in action in the video below:

Free PC maintenance tools

I'll start this list of tools with a small and very useful tool to clean up useless files from your Windows PC.

CCleaner (free)
Link: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

It is a free utility, 3Mb in size, and with it you can clean unnecessary files from your Windows computer. It also features a Registry cleaning tool. You can also integrate it with your Recycle Bin for easy access.

Defraggler (free)
Link: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

This utility comes from the same developer and is a simple defragment tool for your Windows computer. It is fast and better than the one that comes with Windoze.

SpyBot S&D (free)
Link: http://www.safer-networking.org/gr/mirrors/index.html

Finally a free Anti-spam utility to shield you from malicious websites. It protects your pc from malware with a huge list of blocked addresses that this program injects into your Windows Hosts file.

I use these three utilities almost daily, except defraggler which I use once per week. SpyBot SD issues updates regularly and with it you can surf the web with a clear mind.

Ofcourse you should accompany SpyBot with a real-time antivirus and a firewall to ensure maximum protection against attacks and viruses.

If you have a suggestion for this list please leave a comment and I'll include it with the rest!

Million Dollar Earth

Remember back then in 2005 when a website came online, selling pixels for 1$ each? Imagine now the same with Google Maps Pins. Yes, that's right! You can virtual own an entire city now!

Ryan Hart and Scott Dahl, inspired by Alex Tew's idea on selling pixels for advertisement, sparked a brilliant idea in them.

“What would happen if that idea could be reapplied so that someone could “own” the virtual pinpoints within Google Maps,” Hart mused. “Someone could virtually own an entire city.”

Then both felt this burning in the chest, when you get while having an awesome idea, and started working on their idea.

MillionDollarEarth.com

You can now virtually "own" an entire city and place advertisements on it. The virtual city "owners" can include their Facebook Page, Twitter Feed, Youtube video and a custom text box to add whatever they want.

Both Hart and Dahl created this service not just to become rich and famous, but to contribute back to the world by giving 10% of the proceeds to Charity:Water, a non-profit organization helping people of developing nations have clean drinkable water.

A very honorable gesture from them. I wish this world had more people like them.

“Online there has been no unique voice in advertising,” says Hart. “I want this website to change that and be the creative wall for businesses to hang their advertisement on.”

Man eats 25.000th Burger

Just found this story on Digg. I was aware of a man in the US that was eating Big Macs every day for some years now, but was surprised to see that he reached this number! So Don Gorske ate yesterday, in a special ceremony at McDonald's, his 25.000th BigMac!

He jokes that 25,000 is a milestone because people didn’t think he’d live this long. But he says he recently saw a doctor who said he was in good health and his cholesterol is low.

Samsung Galaxy S II updated

Samsung’s Galaxy S II may be fresh to the market, but that hasn’t stopped the company’s engineers from pushing out updates. In fact, we’ve seen two firmware updates arrive through Samsung’s Kies app in short order, bringing the GSII up to i9100XWKE2.

The first left Swype more responsive and apparently also addressed some connectivity issues, while the second fixed the Galaxy S II’s automatic brightness. The firmware is also rootable, which is good news for those looking forward to all the third-party hacks we’re promised.

Mark Shuttleworth: "200 Million Ubuntu users in 4 years"

The "father" of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth, sets a goal for 200 million Ubuntu users by 2015. 200 million users would be great, because this would get software firms to focus their products also for Ubuntu and Linux in general. Hardware support will get better with official drivers releases. Linux already has great software and good hardware support.

200 million users will attract malware creators as well. Today you won't see much malware targeting Linux distros or MacOS, but as more people start to use them malware developers will roll up their sleeves and get cracking.

“[Our] goal is 200 million users of Ubuntu in 4 years. We’re not playing a game for developers hearts and minds – we’re playing a game for the worlds hearts and minds. and to achieve that we’re going to have to play by a new set of rules.”

Twitter is down now...

What's up IT guys? Keep the services alive... :p

Blogger Apologizes for the Outage.

Blogger users were unable to post for 20+ hours, blogs were set in a read-only mode and none could post new content. But things are almost back to normal now. I'm missing some statistics but that's ok.

Official Announcement:
What a frustrating day. We’re very sorry that you’ve been unable to publish to Blogger for the past 20.5 hours. We’re nearly back to normal—you can publish again, and in the coming hours posts and comments that were temporarily removed should be restored. Thank you for your patience while we fix this situation. We use Blogger for our own blogs, so we’ve also felt your pain.

Here’s what happened: during scheduled maintenance work Wednesday night, we experienced some data corruption that impacted Blogger’s behavior. Since then, bloggers and readers may have experienced a variety of anomalies including intermittent outages, disappearing posts, and arriving at unintended blogs or error pages. A small subset of Blogger users (we estimate 0.16%) may have encountered additional problems specific to their accounts. Yesterday we returned Blogger to a pre-maintenance state and placed the service in read-only mode while we worked on restoring all content: that’s why you haven’t been able to publish. We rolled back to a version of Blogger as of Wednesday May 11, so your posts since then were temporarily removed. Those are the posts that we’re in the progress of restoring.

Again, we are very sorry for the impact to our authors and readers. We try hard to ensure Blogger is always available for you to share your thoughts and opinions with the world, and we’ll do our best to prevent this from happening again.

Google announced today the first Chromebooks by Samsung and Acer. According to Google these new devices aren't exactly your typical notebook. They are devices to browse the web, with a notebook form factor...hm... but not a notebook.

Chromebooks will be able boot up in just 8 seconds. And you will be instantly on the web. You won't be storing any data locally but rather in the cloud and it will be accessible every where you go. Even if you destroy your notebook! Um sorry. Your Chromebook.

More interesting is the claim that it will be secure without the need of Antivirus or any type of security software. The OS has been designed from the ground up with security in mind. Will see...

Chromebooks will be available online June 15 in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Spain with more countries following in the coming months.

Nishant Doshi, a Symantec employee, wrote in a blog entry that Symantec discovered that certain Facebook applications inadvertently leaked access tokens to third parties like advertisers or analytic platforms.
